I’ve always been the kind of guy that edits as I write.
I’m not trying to make my work perfect in the first pass, but I can’t leave glaring mistakes behind if I know they’re there.
That’s the way I am, the way I’m built. I can’t help it.
And I’m okay with that
When I write, even if I have an idea, the mistakes that I might make can be more distracting for me than taking the time to correct them.
It’s a bit obsessive on my part, I have to admit, but it comes with the territory that my mind resides in.
But …
I’m not just a writer. I’m also an editor.
And I have a hard time separating the two jobs when I’m working on a project where both tasks are mine.
If you’re a writer …
If you write, you might be one of those writers who need to get it out, put it down on paper, record it before you forget it.
And that’s just fine. Because people like me are ready to edit your work.
No, I’m not asking for work
Well, maybe I am, a bit, sort of.
But no, I’m really just trying to encourage you to find your own path. Find the way that works for you.
I know that each of us has to come to writing in a way that works for ourselves.
Because
Writing is one of the original forms of artistic expression, and just as no two people are alike and no two stories are the same, no one single approach to writing will satisfy every writer, or even possibly any two.
Writing is such a personal thing that it has to be done for yourself first.
And writing for me has to be clean and clear right from the start or I get flustered and distracted.
And I’m aware
That my writing is never perfect right out of the gate. But if it is reasonable correct, I can keep the flow going.
If yours is full of mistakes, I don’t care.
And if you don’t care that your first draft is misspelled and grammatically flawed, then by all means, let it be so until the editing starts.
And if that is the case …
… and you need a good editor, get in touch, I might be available.
What? I said I wasn’t asking for work? Oh, well then, this never happened.
You know, unless you need me.
Thanks for the blog Kelly! I read this twice before I pressed ‘enter’, just to be sure there were no errors!
