On The Edge

Me, retired.
Retirement is taking up all my time.

I thought that when I retired I’d write.

I mean, I’ve always written, but I thought I’d “retire to writing full time.” it seemed like a no brainer.

I figured people would be asking, “Where’s Kelly?” and others would answer, “Oh, he’s writing. Can’t tear him away from it.”

That’s what I thought

You Must Not Hop On Pop

I’ve never lost a crew yet

In the Dr. Seuss book, Hop On Pop there is a page that shows two rambunctious children and a father looking quite worn out. The words say,

“Dad is sad.
Very very sad.
He had a bad day.
What a day dad had.”

My son enjoys that book. I enjoy reading it to him.

My son loves books, and at 20 months of age he is even starting to recognize two or three simple words in print.

How does that make me feel?

Ha, I’m sure you can guess. I’m elated with him. He is a gift and I am one of Read more

Don’t Look Up!

eclipse
Inspiring, right? Right?

Did you know there’s going to be an eclipse this afternoon? Well, depending on when you read this it may have already happened. I’m not in the path of totality, which means that at no time is it safe for me to look at the sun during this eclipse.

And no, I’m not relocating. I have enough to do these days with diapers and the like to keep me busy. I don’t need to chase astronomical phenomena.

Here’s a funny story

Write, right?

I’m not just pretending to be a dad, this guy is counting on me.

I’m retired now. So, you know, I don’t really do anything any more.

Well, I still write the odd poem, and these posts here. And every now and then I try to spend some time on that novel.

Oh, also, now that I’m 65 I’ve become a full time, stay at home parent, as one does.

Nothing much else though

I no longer do any construction work. Oh, well, yes, I am putting gates on our back Read more

The Day I Got Old

Lucky? Or unlucky?

I like the number 13. I’ve never experienced any bad luck as a result of it. I’ve spent my life contemplating its maligned character and contriving ways to support it.

Why does the number 13 deserve my support and respect?

You see, way back in the year 1959, on a chilly January evening, my mother gave birth to me. On the 13th.

And of course members of my cohort began teasing me as soon as they were able to comprehend that I had been born on a day that was considered unlucky.

But was it?

Is Creativity A Talent?

I make a lot of things. I make most of them from scratch. There’s a long list of those things and I’m proud enough to bore you with that list.

But I’m kind enough to abridge it. I like you.

Yes, I make physical things from lumber, and from plastic filament. I make breads and cakes, cookies, pies and squares. I make the odd thing from textiles on my sewing machine, I’m good enough to get away with calling it sewing, but not good enough to make clothes. Mostly I make repairs.

I also make stories. I tell them in poetry, lyrics, and prose. That makes me a writer. Read more

It’s Too Late

Is It Though?

Smart cat. Smarter than I.

A while ago I began a novel about a cat, and its friends, other cats, who do extraordinary things. It’s been a while since I have visited with those words, with those cats.

One of the things I’ve done in this life to support myself was blog writing. Not this blog, this pays only in satisfaction, though that should never be considered a negative or nil income. Read more
