As a writer, I spend a lot of time … not writing. If you don’t believe me, just ask our blog wrangler, the inimitable Lori Twining, she’s always trying to get me to write my blog post. The funny thing is that blog writing is half of what I do for a living. Ha ha …
… oh, Lori doesn’t think that’s as funny as I do …
But I have a life. I have a lot of things going on in that life. The website I work for locally was recently hacked and it’s one of my jobs to see that that doesn’t happen again.
How am I supposed to write while the bad people are trying to use our site to get sensitive info from our readers.
My boss asked me recently, “Why don’t you write for our site any more?”
The answer to that is another question. Who has time?
Not me!
Additionally, I’ve been on the road a lot lately, there are things I’m trying to get done and they require me to be in different places at odd times.
And, as I said, I’m responsible for the well being of at least one website, two if you count the little bit of work I do here, making sure that this blog is up to date when Wrangler Lori has too much to do and I notice something needs doing.
But …
Just because I don’t have time to be writing, writing, writing all the time doesn’t mean I can ever forget that I’m a writer.
One resource for keeping my finger on the pulse of the writing industry is blogs, like this one, that discuss writing. But when I’m busy online doing the things I do, it’s hard to read blog posts.
Also, as I said, I’m driving so much, and I might note that reading and driving are particularly incompatible.
And yet …
There is a type of blog that one can avail themselves of while doing almost anything. Yes, even driving. They’re called podcasts.
And there are podcasts on just about every topic, and one of the most prolific topics is writing.
And yes, I’ve got a few favourites.
For instance
There’s a perfectly wonderful podcast about screen writing called OnThePage® with Pilar Alessandra and I’m a fan, though I admit I don’t listen to it as much as I maybe ought to.
Grammar Girl Quick and Dirty Tips for Better Writing is Mignon Fogarty’s cheery podcast that talks about grammar and writing. This one is a good one for anyone interested in writing well.
The Writer’s Digest also has a podcast, and despite its somewhat uninspiring name, The Writer’s Digest Podcast, it’s really worth a listen.
These three are just a glimpse of the vast number of titles you can find with a quick Google Search. But I’m glad I could share them with you.
