Writing for a Cause! (and cupcakes?)

CUPCAKES!

What do cupcakes have to do with writing for a cause?

Read on to find out.

In a couple weeks, I will be participating in the Muskoka Novel Marathon to raise money for adult literacy. It isn’t a classic marathon. I’m not going to run thirty kilometres or skip jump-rope for hours on end. I’m going to write.

That’s right!

A writing marathon in support of ADULT LITERACY. (and a chance for you to win cupcakes!)

Warning… this is the sad puppy part of this blog.

There are many reasons why members of our community find themselves unable to read or write. Some have been left behind by our school system, shuffled through the years, even though their reading and comprehension failed to grow along with their height. Some students are so smart, they faked and compensated their way through school, covering up their deficiencies, so they never gained the basic skills they need to read contracts or understand their utility bills.

In Canada, we are blessed to have the space and resources to welcome individuals from around the world into our amazing society. The reality is though, that many people come to Canada for refuge, leaving their home, family and friends. To further burden their lives, some are unable to speak or write English or French.

The realities, such as they are, leave Canadian born and new Canadians unable to read their own birthday card or Father’s Day notes. Some parents can’t share night-time stories with their kids and others are constantly fearful someone will recognize their weakness and use it against them. They feel shameful. They’re left unable to connect with social media or sign into their own bank account. Road signs are foreign, so their world gets smaller and smaller, preventing them from advocating for themselves, protecting themselves or exploring the world around them.

Have I convinced you to support this great cause yet?

I hope so.

PLEASE DONATE!

I’m currently plotting, brainstorming, molding characters and motivations to write a new novel over an extended weekend. Of course, I won’t finish this novel over a weekend, and it will be in very rough, first draft form! But it will be the spark of a great story.

If you hear from me personally, I’m looking for donations to support this great cause. If I’ve answered your phone call to discuss your dog’s vomit or looked at photos of your cat’s broken tooth… then it’s time to pay up!

I see you!

I keep a list of everyone I discuss, email or text with about their veterinary dilemmas… especially in the evening or over weekends. Unless you were in my office, as a registered patient, during work hours… you are on my list!  If we discussed the medical condition of your pet, or your uncle’s dog, or your friend’s horse after hours, then your name is on my list and it’s time to pay up!

Your invoice is coming in the form of a plea to support a good cause.

PLEASE DONATE!

As a further incentive, I’m offering PRIZES!

If you donate, you will be entered into two randomized draws!

For every $10 donation, you will get a ballot entered to NAME A CHARCTER in my new novel and one lucky individual will win a dozen cupcakes – hand made by the incredible, CUPCAKES by HOPE

I’ll admit it, I’m looking forward to the writing portion of this marathon. I have a killer concept and as the setting is colouring into my imagination, I’m beginning to hear the voices of my characters squabbling and I can’t wait to begin!

Thank you kindly for your support!
